Merit Scholarship 15-Credit Hour Alert

To proactively support students' scholarship retention, the University Advising Center partners with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to identify and notify LIFE and Palmetto Fellows scholarship recipients if they are registered for fewer than 15 credits hours in the current semester and may be at risk of not meeting scholarship renewal requirements.

Intended Outcomes

The primary goal of this initiative is to inform students with state scholarships (LIFE and Palmetto Fellows) who are enrolled in fewer than the recommended 15 credit hours per semester that they may be at risk for not meeting their scholarship renewal requirements. This initiative will encourage students to liaise with the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships to confirm their scholarship renewal requirements and to review their academic enrollment plans.

Academic advisors can help students create a course plan to meet their academic scholarship renewal requirements (if necessary). Advisors have the contextual knowledge to guide students in selecting appropriate courses to fulfill their credit hour requirements while aligning with their academic goals.

Timeline for Intervention

For the Fall 2026 semester, students will receive an email after the withdrawal deadline if they are registered for less than 15 credit hours in the current semester. This will be a one-time notification.

Intervention Process

Students who are receiving the LIFE or Palmetto Fellows scholarship in the current semester and are enrolled in less than 15 credit hours will receive an email alerting them that they are registered for fewer credit hours than is recommended and informing them of the potential impact to state scholarship renewal. This email encourages students to contact Financial Aid and/or their assigned academic advisor to discuss their course schedule and scholarship renewal requirements.

Advisors are responsible for responding to any outreach from students on this topic and assist students with modifying their current schedule or planning for future semesters to meet renewal requirements as needed.
