Our Mission
As Sara Guyer notes in the World Humanities Report , it is through the humanities that we understand “who we are, who we have been, what we have thought, and how we think today.” Since 2021, the USC Humanities Collaborative has supported a robust series of programs that include research and creative working groups, public talks, digital humanities workshops, podcasts, and partnerships with local arts and humanities organizations. These activities bring together faculty from across disciplines to generate new knowledge, and we advocate for the meaningful integration of humanistic inquiry in every classroom.
By supporting life-long learning in history, language, literature, culture, ethics, and the arts, the USC Humanities Collaborative is instrumental to the University of South Carolina’s mission of creating engaged, global citizens. Our goal is to create a foundation for thriving intellectual community, one guided by scholars and students who amplify the profound value of the human spark in every aspect of our lives.
Director: Dr. Qiana Whitted has been a Professor of English and African American Studies at USC since 2003. Her research and teaching focus on Black literary and cultural studies, and American comics and graphic novels. She is the author of the Eisner Award-winning book, EC Comics: Race, Shock, and Social Protest.
Associate Director: Maureen Ryan is a Research Assistant Professor in Media Arts, Film and Media Studies. Her work explores how television and other forms of media have represented women's labor and everyday lives, the cultural politics of lifestyle media, and the history of television and digital platforms. She is the author of the forthcoming book, A Cup of Ambition: Women at Work in 1980s and 1990s Broad Comedies.

CHCI is a collaborative of humanities researchers, scholars, and educators united by the goal of supporting the future of the humanities by fostering global interdisciplinary collaboration.
The National Humanities Alliance (NHA) is a nationwide coalition advocating for the humanities on campuses, in communities, and on Capitol Hill through grants, advocacy, and education.
As members of the Folger Institute's consortium , our students and faculty are eligible to apply for grants-in-aid to participate in a wide offering of programming — seminars, workshops, and symposia. A center for humanities research at the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Folger Institute gathers interdisciplinary communities of scholars for collection-based research and fellowships in public humanities and artistic research.
