Biography

Katherine Barbieri is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of South Carolina, specializing in International Relations and International Political Economy. Her research focuses on the intersection of international political economy and conflict, emphasizing the role of economic incentives in war, counterinsurgency operations, and the impact of war on trade and global supply chains. She also explores trade between hostile states and the relationship between trade and geopolitics.

As the host of the Correlates of War (COW) Project's Trade Data Set, Professor Barbieri works to enhance the accuracy of historical and contemporary trade data. She is the author of The Liberal Illusion: Does Trade Promote Peace? (University of Michigan Press, 2002) and co-editor of Globalization and Armed Conflict (Rowman and Littlefield, 2003). Her research has appeared in leading journals such as The Journal of Politics, Journal of Peace Research, and Security Studies.

Before joining USC, Dr. Barbieri was an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University and the University of North Texas. In 2010, she was a Fulbright Research Scholar in Israel. She earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Binghamton University. She received the American Political Science Association’s Helen Dwight Reid Award for the best international relations, law, and politics doctoral dissertation.

Professor Barbieri teaches courses in international relations, global politics, and international political economy, as well as specialized topics such as globalization, security, and the political economy of war.
