This course introduces Europe primarily through the study of the major patterns and processes that define Europe as a region and as a contemporary actor in the world today. The course emphasizes: the idea of Europe as a region; environmental, socio-cultural, political, and economic features of Europe; and crises and changes in Europe today.

This introductory course examines the history, politics, and aesthetics of cinema in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino contexts, from the silent era to the digital age. Along the way, we will explore such major themes as authoritarianism, social inequality, urban violence, religion, and migration. In both theory and practice, we will engage critically with film as an artistic medium and as a lens through which to understand culture and society across the Americas. Background on the region and knowledge of foreign languages are welcome but not required.
