Background

Dr. Dawson provides leadership for the strategic development and implementation of the college’s academic programs, academic reporting and accreditation, as well as comprehensive planning and evaluation efforts aligned with the college’s mission and strategic priorities. Previously, she served as the inaugural director of the Smart Start Nursing Pathway program from 2017–2021. 

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (1988) and a Master of Science in Nursing as a pediatric nurse practitioner (1996) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a PhD in Nursing Science (2014) from the University of South Carolina. 

Teaching

Dr. Dawson teaches health sciences and research methods courses for the College of Nursing and the SC Honors College. She also has a background in pediatric primary care clinical teaching for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and medical students. Research

She is an NIH-funded nurse scientist whose expertise includes healthcare communication, patient-centered care, implementation research, and innovative strategies to improve access to screening and preventive services in rural and underserved communities. Her research focuses on strengthening healthcare delivery systems through improved communication, expanded access to screening and preventive services, and evidence-informed interventions. Her work has been supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and The Duke Endowment.
