Making an Impact

USC's Office of the Vice President for Research has, since 2011, made major investments in the university's research community at every level. Funding programs for student and faculty research have contributed to big gains in Carolina's competitiveness, and made impacts on the development of individuals along the way.

USC Postdocs Band Together

In 2014, USC's postdoctoral scholars joined together to form a new organization, the USC Postdoctoral Association. This group provides networking, professional development, social support and other opportunities for a campus community that might otherwise fall through the cracks.

Competing at the Highest Level

The USC faculty has broken its external funding records for three years in a row, garnering $253.6 million in sponsored awards in fiscal year 2017. Read about some of the notable research projects raising the bar and helping Carolina compete at the highest level.

A new grant from the National Science Foundation's Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research will position South Carolina as a leader in advanced materials manufacturing, and develop a new pipeline of diverse and highly skilled talent through collaborations among ten colleges and universities around the state.

Office of Research Seeks Nominations for 2018 Breakthrough Awards

The Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking nominations for our three signature Breakthrough award programs: Breakthrough Leadership in Research, Breakthrough Stars and Breakthrough Graduate Scholars. All nominations for these programs are due by Friday, October 20, 2017.

2017 SPARC Graduate Research Grant Workshops Begin August 30

The Office of the Vice President for Research is accepting SPARC Grant applications until Wednesday, October 11. SPARC applicants are required to attend a SPARC application workshop, which will be offered four times beginning on Wednesday, August 30.

Office of Research Offers Grant Basics Workshop for Graduate Students and Postdocs

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to a special Grant Writing Basics Workshop on Thursday, September 21. The workshop includes an overview of strategies for grant writing and budget development, followed by a panel discussion featuring past SPARC and ASPIRE I, Track II-B reviewers.

USC's Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center and Collaborators Awarded $3.9 Million NSF Grant to Study the Unfolded Protein Response to Stress

A new grant from the National Science Foundation's Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research will fund a collaborative study of a specific cellular stress response by USC, Claflin University and Auburn University.

2017 Summer Research Symposium to Showcase Undergraduate Scholars

The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to invite undergraduate students working on summer research projects with USC faculty to participate in the 2017 Summer Research Symposium on Thursday, July 27, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Thomas Cooper Library's Hollings Program Room.

USC Ranks Among Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2016

For the fifth year in a row, USC has been ranked among the 100 universities that received the most federal patents in 2016.

Mechanical engineering associate professor, Chen Li was honored with the 2017 Young Researcher Award for Excellence in Scientific Research by Governor Henry McMaster on Wednesday, May 24, at a ceremony in the Statehouse.

The Office of the Vice President for Research is proud to announce the results of our ASPIRE I, II and III internal research funding competitions. The office initiated the annual ASPIRE grant program in 2012 to fund promising research, and shared research infrastructure, to strengthen USC's competitiveness for external grants and to increase research and scholarship throughout the USC System.

Office of Research Announces 2017 RISE Recipients

The Vice President for Research is pleased to announce the 2017 recipients of the Research Initiative for Summer Engagement, or RISE program. This year, 35 faculty researchers from USC's system campuses and online degree-completion programs will receive RISE funds to support their summer research projects.

Each year, the Office of the Vice President for Research offers a competitive research grant program for graduate students from all areas of study. This academic year, 54 students from 9 different academic units have been awarded SPARC grants.
