Directions & Maps

Below you will find maps and driving directions to the Baruch Institute facilities in Georgetown, SC, located on the privately owned Hobcaw Barony research preserve, and on the main campus in Columbia, SC.

From the north (Myrtle Beach):  Take US Hwy 17 South about 35 miles.  Hobcaw Barony (22 Hobcaw Road, Georgetown SC) will be on the left one mile past the DeBordieu Colony housing development.

From the south (City of Georgetown):  Take US Hwy 17 North.  As you leave the City of Georgetown you will cross the Waccamaw River and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.  The entrance to Hobcaw Barony is approximately one mile on the right.

Just inside the entrance is the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center.  Straight ahead is Hobcaw Road and the access gate to the Barony and the Marine Field Laboratory. To the right through the Discovery Center parking area is the Kimbel Living and Learning Center (conference lodge, dorms, and cottages). Note: you do not access the gate to go to the dorms.

At the electric access gate (on Hobcaw Road),

  • Enter your gate code (provided by BMFL Front Office staff with a reservation) OR
  • Select the directory option, scroll to USC Baruch Institute, and press to dial. You will be connected to the BMFL Front Office staff who will open the gate as appropriate.

From the access gate continue on Hobcaw Road 0.2 miles until you come to a three way intersection. From there, veer left on Crab Hall Road.  Drive approximately 2.2 miles until you reach the lab

Please drive slowly and be careful with oncoming traffic. The road is narrow, the shoulders are soft and/or swampy, and it's not uncommon to encounter local wildlife (deer, turkeys, etc.). There are only a few safe places to pull off Crab Hall Road to allow vehicles to pass one another.

As you approach the Field Laboratory complex, please park in the lot on the left.

The Baruch Institute's main campus seawater laboratory, the Marine Culture and Aquaria Laboratory (MCAL), is located on the first floor (Room 112) of the Earth and Water Sciences building (EWS) on the University of South Carolina's main campus in Columbia, SC.

Part of a three building science complex, EWS connects the Coker Life Sciences building on Sumter Street and the Jones Physical Science Center on Main Street. Access to EWS is through either of these buildings.

An overview map of the USC Columbia campus is searchable by building name or building code (89 for EWS).

If you need additional assistance locating us, please call the BMFL Front Office at 843-904-9024.
