Abstract:
Gaia observations have revealed a superthermal eccentricity distribution of wide binaries, departing from the thermal distribution proposed since Jeans (1919). The eccentricity distribution of wide binaries offers a unique probe of their formation in the turbulent interstellar medium. Turbulence determines the relative velocities of forming wide binaries, leaving a characteristic imprint on their eccentricity distribution. In this talk, I will present our theoretical and numerical studies of wide-binary formation in turbulence, and how the resulting eccentricity distributions can persist through subsequent star cluster evolution. I will discuss how these results can help us understand the observed wide-binary eccentricities.
