Boren Awards – Campus Deadline January 6

Attention graduate students interested in working for the federal government: applications for the Boren Awards are open.

The Boren program funds eligible U.S. citizen graduate students in all programs and degree types to undertake intensive language study abroad and provides preparation for internationally focused careers in the federal government.

Last year over 40% of graduate student applicants received the fellowship.

About the Boren program
  • The Boren Fellowship is open to U.S. citizens who are graduate students in all disciplines.
  • Provides up to $30,000 to spend a semester or year abroad studying one of more than 60 critical need languages.
  • No previous language experience required.
  • Advanced graduate students are encouraged to conduct research in addition to their intensive language study.
  • Fellowship recipients commit to work for at least one year for a federal agency.
  • Fellows have gone on to careers in the Departments of State, Homeland Security, Defense, and Commerce as well as intelligence agencies, USAID, and more!

University 101 is accepting applications for new instructors for Fall 2025. Prospective instructors should submit the new instructor application, along with a cover letter and resume. 

Requirements
  • master's degree or higher from an accredited institution (official transcript required)
  • status as a full-time university employee, retiree of USC Columbia, or Ph.D. student
  • completion of the Teaching Experience Workshop
  • approval by the instructor's supervisor or department chair
  • approval by the director of University 101 Programs
  • participate in regular professional development opportunities offered by University 101 Programs

Critical Language ScholarshipDue November 19

The Critical Language Scholarship provides eligible students in all degree programs the opportunity to participate in a fully funded intensive summer language program.

CLS exists to encourage U.S. citizens to study one of 12 languages. Many languages require no previous study to apply. Eligible graduate students looking to develop language skills for research or future career plans should apply.

About the program:
  • 8-10 week fully funded intensive summer language programs hosted at sites abroad
  • Provides equivalent of one year of language study
  • Study one of 12 critical-need languages:
    • Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu
 Who should apply:
  • Students who are U.S. citizens and nationals who are currently enrolled in any undergraduate, graduate, or professional program
  • Students who are interested in studying a critical-need language to
    • Gain international experience
    • Prepare for future research

Graduate Assistant – Qualitative Research Project

Description: 

The Center for Child and Family Studies is looking for one graduate research assistant to assist with a project looking at the factors impacting attrition rates for participants in Multisystemic Therapy (MST) in South Carolina. This position may appeal to students interested in developing their qualitative research skills, or who have an interest in working with or understanding the needs and interventions for high-risk youth.

Primary role activities:
  • Support writing, instrument development and testing, and participate in research team meetings.
  • Make outreach to potential study participants, using a script to explain the project and solicit participation.
  • Travel throughout the state for individual interviews with participants (with accompaniment).
  • Conduct initial or follow-up literature searches using online databases.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate students who are enrolled at the University of South Carolina and will stay at USC for at least one more year. Experience with high-risk youth, youth with carceral involvement, or therapeutic interventions with youth is appreciated but not required.
  • Have a keen interest in evidence-based interventions for high-risk youth and a belief that youth with externalizing behaviors can make positive changes in their lives.
    Have an interest or experience with qualitative research methodologies, and an interest in conducting interviews with youth, families, and mental health practitioners.
  • Have interest in supporting the understanding of evidence-based practices for youth and how to increase participation and completion in these services.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work with the research team’s schedule are required.
    Have a driver’s license, access to a car and able to travel as needed for interviews and/or research functions. (You will be reimbursed for mileage.)
  • Applicants with personal lived experience of involvement in foster care or similar service systems (e.g., mental health, housing and houselessness, justice systems) are encouraged to apply, and lived experience may be considered in lieu of some work experience. First-generation college students and students of color are also encouraged to apply.
  • Have interest in supporting the understanding of evidence-based practices for youth and how to increase participation and completion in these services.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work with the research team’s schedule are required.

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of well-being professional staff, the Graduate Assistant (GA) will gain health promotion and education experience by supporting all aspects of the Healthy Campus Initiatives team. The mission of Healthy Campus Initiatives is to empower students through a holistic, community-based approach to develop impactful programming, supportive services, and equitable practices for a healthy campus environment to live, learn, work, play, and thrive. This position will provide the GA with public health practical experience in a unique campus setting. Some of the responsibilities and opportunities include:

  • Facilitating presentations and trainings on general well-being, sexual health, stressmanagement/resiliency, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention in University 101 classes, withinstudent groups, and other settings as requested by the Carolina community
  • Assisting with the development, implementation and evaluation of student well-being programs and heathpromotion initiatives
  • Provide wellness coaching and STI testing education appointments 1:1 to students
  • Connect with and lead student leaders, peer health educators, and other undergraduate student staff inbest-practice well-being initiatives related to priority health issues on the USC-Columbia campus
Skill Requirements:

Stipend and Dates of Employment:
  • This position provides in-state tuition rates and an academic year stipend.

Job Title:

The College of Social Work KinCarolina program (https://kincarolina.org/) specialist

Job Duties: 

To connect individually with kinship caregivers at different points of their participation to support their financial well-being;

To meet with prospective participants to collect and review caregivers’ financial information and determine potential impact of program compensation on public benefits;

To meet with caregivers throughout their participation in the KinCarolina program to connect them with financial resources and support obtaining benefits;

To develop and present trainings to KinCarolina implementation team around benefits in South Carolina and general eligibility for kinship caregivers;

To support necessary recruitment and outreach efforts for the KinCarolina program, with both in-person and virtual activities.

In summary, this position is both an administrative and direct service role and will be responsible for scheduling meetings with caregivers, reviewing their public benefits enrollment and eligibility, providing caregivers with appropriate forms to sign up/renew, and assisting caregivers with paperwork completion, including payment forms for the program with in-person and virtual meeting options. 

Qualifications:
  • At least having a bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks and coordinate with clients within specific timeframes
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, virtual meeting platforms, and ability to learn and use various software programs for organizational tasks and file sharing
  • Strong connections with child-and family serving agencies; Experience providing services to families in community settings; In-depth knowledge of public benefits; General knowledge of kinship-care
