Background

Sondra H. Berger, Ph.D., professor emerita of the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, made significant contributions to pharmacology education and research during her tenure. She joined the University of South Carolina in 1985 as an assistant professor in the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences. She received tenure and promotion to associate professor in 1991 and later served as vice-chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences from 2008 to 2010. Dr. Berger was named Researcher of the Year by the College of Pharmacy in 1995 and 2004.

Dr. Berger retired in 2013 after nearly three decades of dedicated service. Her research, which includes 45 publications with over 1,200 citations, has been widely recognized. Even in retirement, she remains committed to education, serving as an instructor at the Lourie Center, a not-for-profit center offering physical fitness, cultural, social, and education programs for seniors in downtown Columbia. Her contributions continue to impact both the university and the broader scientific community.
