Michael Amiridis, the University of South Carolina's 30th president, is committed to using two of the university's greatest strengths — education and research — to improve prospects for all South Carolinians.

The challenges facing higher education are many, but President Amiridis is confident in the university's ability to address them with a commitment to excellence, transparency and accessibility. As the university's 30th president, he is drawing on his experience as a faculty member, academic administrator and higher education leader to guide South Carolina into its next era of success.

About President Amiridis

 

Michael Amiridis became 30th president of the University of South Carolina on July 1, 2022. Before coming home to Carolina, he led the University of Illinois Chicago as its chancellor since 2015.

Prior to leading UIC, Amiridis spent more than two decades at our Columbia campus as a faculty member and administrator, serving from 2009 to 2015 as the university's executive vice president for academic affairs and provost.

As a researcher, Amiridis earned the National Science Foundation's award for early-career scientists and engineers in 1999, was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012 and was elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2015.

He and his wife, Ero, are the parents of two children who are both graduates of the University of South Carolina.

First Lady Ero Aggelopoulou-Amiridis


Like the president, First Lady Ero Aggelopoulou-Amiridis has strong roots at the University of South Carolina. In addition to earning two advanced degrees from USC — a master’s in art history, ’97, and a Ph.D. in philosophy, ’12 — she cherishes memories of the campus as the backdrop for many pivotal moments in the Amiridis family’s life.
