Outdoor Recreation Student Employees

Outdoor Recreation connects students to adventure through climbing, gear rentals, and guided trips. Our team fosters a welcoming environment where students can explore, learn new skills, and build confidence in the outdoors. Whether on the wall, in the Hub, or leading trips, we create opportunities for challenge, growth, and community.

Climbing Wall Assistant

As a Climbing Wall Assistant, you'll create a fun and welcoming space where students can challenge themselves and build confidence. From teaching basic climbing techniques to making sure gear is safe and ready to go, you’ll play a key role in shaping an awesome climbing community on campus.

Job Responsibilities 
  • Provide intentional and effective customer service to all climbers.
  • Inspect, maintain, and set up climbing equipment.
  • Routinely complete safety procedures to ensure quality risk management. 
  • Encourage participation and assist in promoting climbing programs and events.
  • Respond to emergencies within scope of training.
  • Meet the physical demands of the role, including belaying and climbing demonstrations.
Leadership & Additional Roles

Oversees daily operations, staff scheduling and development, and equipment records. They also play a key role in shaping programs, equipment decisions, and risk management practices.

Climbing Wall Instructors are experienced staff who complete and pass the AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor course. In this leadership role, they teach climbing clinics, support skill development, and help shape the educational and safety culture of the wall.

Outdoor Recreation Trip Leader

As a Outdoor Recreation Trip Leader, you’ll take students on outdoor adventures, helping them learn new skills, push their limits, and create lifelong memories. Whether it’s paddling, hiking, or climbing, you’ll make the outdoors more accessible, exciting, and meaningful for others.

Job Responsibilities 
  • Lead and facilitate outdoor trips, creating meaningful experiences for participants.
  • Teach outdoor skills such as navigation, paddling, camping, or climbing.
  • Maintain and transport gear, ensuring proper use and care by participants.
  • Implement conservative risk management practices to reduce the likelihood of injury.
  • Foster an appreciation for the outdoors by building a positive, engaging, and educational environment.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide support as needed.
  • Meet the physical demands of leading outdoor trips, including carrying equipment and traveling in remote environments.

ORec Hub Assistant

 At the ORec Hub, you’ll help students gear up for their next outdoor trip, whether it’s renting a kayak or finding the perfect backpack or tent for the occasion. You’ll connect people to the outdoors and make sure they have everything they need to explore with confidence.

Job Responsibilities 
  • Deliver excellent customer service by assisting patrons with rentals and general inquiries.
  • Educate students on outdoor gear, ensuring they have the right equipment for their adventures.
  • Maintain and organize outdoor gear, checking for damage and ensuring all equipment is rental-ready.
  • Follow risk management practices to ensure safe and responsible gear usage.
  • Meet physical demands such as lifting and moving gear.
Leadership Roles

Leads daily operations and staff coordination, including scheduling, trainings, and team accountability. They also support gear management, Hub layout, and promotion of outdoor recreation services.
