Joseph F. Rice School of Law

Abby Duwel

Why did you choose USC Rice School of Law?

I chose USC Rice because after spending four years here for undergrad, Columbia had really started to feel like home. Staying part of the USC family was important to me, and joining a law school that’s genuinely invested in helping me grow and succeed made the decision even easier. Plus, the building and facilities are beautiful.

What advice would you give a first-year law student?

My biggest piece of advice for first-year law students is to avoid falling into the trap of constantly comparing yourself to others. It’s tough, especially in a competitive environment, but it’s important to trust the habits and work ethic that got you here. At the same time, law school is a different beast than undergrad, so be ready to adapt. Push yourself, stay open to new strategies, and focus on what works best for you.

What surprised you the most about law school?

What surprised me most about law school was how genuinely friendly and supportive the environment is. Whether it’s students, faculty, or staff, people here actually care about helping you succeed - not just academically, but personally too. It was refreshing to realize I wasn’t just another number. Professors are approachable, open to questions, and often take the time to get to know you beyond the classroom, which makes the experience feel a lot more personal and meaningful.
